Beginning Quilt Class Overview
Quilt Sampler Taught by: Cheri Fleming
From: It’s “El”ementary by Eleanor Burns
You may wish to purchase this book as the information in it is excellent for the beginning quilter. Some of Eleanor
Burns techniques are much easier and more mistake proof than traditional methods. The book shows you several ways
of combining the blocks, i.e. Table runners, wall hangings and includes fabric for 12” or 6” finished blocks for the
different layouts. We will cover the techniques used in the book. We will be doing the 5 12” block sampler.
The class will be 5 sessions, each 3 hours long, starting Thursday, February 9th through March 8, 2012. You may
choose either an afternoon session 12:30 to 3:30 or an evening session 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Depending on the evening
class preference we could start at 6:00 pm if that works better for everyone. The cost of the class is $60. Class
minimum 3 students.
In our “Beginning Quilt” class you will learn the following:
• Rotary Cutting
• How to use various rulers
• Using various feet for piecing and quilting
• Setting machine for a ¼ seam
• Proper threads for various effects
• Sewing and pressing
• One method of appliqué, but we will talk briefly about other options
• Squaring up blocks
• Sewing top together – On Point
• Adding borders
• Making a “folded” inner border or “Flange”
• Making Nine-Patch corners in outer border
• Preparing the back of quilt
• Layering the quilt
• Machine Quilting – not free motion machine quilting. We will use a walking foot.
• Binding with mitered corners
• How to make an easy Design Board.
To prepare for the first class:
1. Buy fabric: You may buy fabric for only one block at a time or purchase all the fabric at one time. I suggest
buying all fabric at one time. Fabric chart is in the book. The book also has a guide for the colors of fabrics. I will
provide on a separate sheet the fabric requirements for the 12” block sampler which is 42” x 42” finished.
2. Wash fabric prior to cutting. Also, I serge or use an overcast stitch on edges of fabric prior to washing. This
prevents fraying and is well worth the extra time. Washing the fabric helps the finished quilt retain proper shape after it
is washed. You can put fabric in the dryer to dry. I don’t put my finished quilts in the dryer, although that is a personal
decision.
3. Iron fabric using spray starch or Mary Ellen’s Best Press. Starch or sizing is fine and is not as costly as “Best
Press”. I also use steam when I press the fabric.
4. Have a Rotary cutter, (45mm) is a good size for most options. Most rotary cutters can be used right or left
handed. Depends on which side you attach the blade . I will show how to fold fabric to get it straight in class. We can
repress if a fold is stubborn.
5. Have a cutting mat: I would suggest at least a 18” by 24. I will talk more about mats in class. We will cut some of
the fabric in class as time allows.
6. Bring sewing machine, a neutral color thread for piecing, and a quarter inch foot. We will get our machines set-
up for a ¼” seam allowance. If time, we will start piecing the first block which is the heart block. Otherwise we will start
piecing at the next session.
• The book will be an immense help to your preparation and understanding of the supplies.
